Dredging Ladner Harbour Channel

Christmas came early for those that use the Ladner Harbour Channel. Vancouver Pile Driving arrived December 9th, 2023 to remove the accumulation of silt from the channel. The project will address a segment of one of the critical waterways in the Ladner area by restoring channel depth into the Harbour. Work is expected to continue through January.

 Quotation of the day

 (Our very own Mike Owen)

"It’s like telling the City of Merritt to plough the Coquihalla.”

Ladner Reach Marina manager Michael Owen says it shouldn’t be the responsibility of                                         municipalities to dredge the Frase
r River, amid a call for federal and provincial funding.

Townhall

On July 12th, 2023 The Ladner Fisherman's Hall was left with standing room only with a Townhall organized by MLA Ian Paton and his PA Sonya Sangster. The Ladner Sediment Group were instrumental in initiating the Townhall and were encouraged to see MP Carla Qualtrough and Delta Mayor George Harvie as speakers.

Sediment Re-Use

In June, members of the Ladner Sediment Group met with Eric Balke, Biologist with Ducks Unlimited and Neville Berard, Coastal Engineer regarding an exciting pilot project just off Steveston. The Sturgeon Bank Sediment Enhancement Pilot Project uses dredged sediment from the Fraser River to rebuild a natural habitat that is eroding. The idea of using dredged silt to rebuild a natural habitat is a WIN WIN and provides an alternative to dumping silt at sea.
